Evolution towards high or very high strength steels is a constant matter of preoccupation for designers and constructors in order to decrease thickness of structural parts and thus to generate cost reduction. For example, gas and petroleum companies show a great interest in X100 materials for construction of long distance pipelines, and X120 steel grade appears in the pipe mills and pipe laying industry. E690 steel is also used for offshore structures, especially jack-up rigs. To be able to take advantage of the properties of these very high strength materials, a full range of welding consumables as well as recommendations on the welding of high strength steel structures have to be developed for the steel and welding communities, as well as for fabricators. General considerations regarding welding of high strength steels (HSS) are presented. The paper outlines the strategy followed to develop submerged arc welding (SAW) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) consumables dedicated to the welding of high strength steels, with a special highlight on offshore structure applications. Solutions to weld high thickness E690 and E830 steels are presented.
