This paper presents a two phase boost converter with tapped inductors suitable for 14 V/42 V automotive applications. By using tapped inductors, cancellation of the converter input and output current harmonics has been achieved although the converter operates at 50 % duty cycle and with the required voltage conversion ratio of 1:3. Both tapped inductors have been integrated on a single core to reduce the size and cost of the magnetic component. The paper outlines a detailed analysis of the converter and gives experimental results obtained from the full-size prototype. The proposed converter achieves virtually zero input ripple current. Compared with the conventional three-phase boost converter less active switching devices and less drivers are required. The input current ripple increases with increasing deviations of the duty cycle from the optimum of 50 %. The proposed converter can therefore be an attractive solution for the 14 V / 42 V automotive power net in particular for applications where only a constant voltage conversion is required.
