Tightened emission legislation, combined with efforts to optimize overall economic value of the diesel engine, has created new challenges in automobile manufacturing. Concurrently, improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions have become major market factors for vehicle development. In order to achieve these challenging goals, thorough optimization must be done on engine and vehicle design as well as on the exhaust aftertreatment system. In the search for monolithic, non-segmented diesel particulate filters (DPFs), oxide materials such as Cordierite or aluminum titanate, have become the focus of product development. The authors demonstrate how Corning's Advanced Cordierite DPF (DuraTrap AC) has been successfully applied to Audi's new 2.7 L and 3.0 L V6 TDI engines, providing improved fuel efficiency, by offering low levels of pressure drop and shortened regeneration periods, but also potential cost advantages against conventional SiC DPF systems. An advanced regeneration strategy was developed, supporting safe regeneration under certain operating conditions. The present paper also shows how the new DuraTrap AC DPF, mounted in a close-coupled position, maintains excellent filtration efficiency due to its proven thermal shock performance and product characteristics. The new Audi A4, to be released in mid 2008, will be the first passenger car on the market equipped with the DuraTrap AC technology.
