V2X communication is commonly seen as the next milestone for improving traffic safety. To achieve that, vehicles will be enabled to exchange any kind of information. This article provides a broad survey on Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication (V2I). Both types of communication are comprehended simply by V2X. The ultimate goal of V2X is to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries by realizing direct information exchange between the vehicles themselves leading to an improved knowledge of the driver regarding her surrounding. However, on the way to achieve that there are many challenges for the automotive industry. These peculiar challenges, divided into technical and organizational ones are pointed out in this article. For example, the high number and dynamics of communicating entities as well as how to achieve the minimum number of vehicles equipped to ensure proper operation of V2X. This also demands market introduction strategies and business models. In the second part of this article it is described how the mentioned challenges are countered in a world-wide scope. In the U.S., Japan and Europe different approaches have been chosen like the different views on infrastructure-dependence. That is, the U.S. and Japan focus firstly on launching V2I and then support V2V in the second step whereas in Europe the focus lies on infrastructure-independent V2V communication. From a world-wide point of view significant research progress has been presented. As a consequence, large-scale field operation tests are planned to prove the functionality of V2X in the everyday life. DENSO as a global acting company focuses on research and development of integration of active safety solutions. Also, DENSO supports the world-wide progress in V2X, i.e. in Japan, U.S. and Europe. As a technical contribution, DENSO distributes a V2X feasibility platform which fulfils the current state-of-the-art and satisfies automotive requirements on electronic equipment in automotive appliance.
