This paper describes a methodological approach for optimization of the automated manual transmission (AMT) gear shifting strategy in parallel hybrid electric vehicles. AMTs make use of robotics and mechatronics to handle the gear shifting operation in vehicles as gear shifting is controlled electronically by a hydraulic system or electric motor. In this study, the AMT shifting strategy is formulated as an optimization problem using genetic algorithm based on the minimization of fuel consumption and engine emissions while maintaining drivability conditions. The results obtained from simulation study show the effectiveness of the approach and reveal that the optimization is much more effective in specific driving condition where the AMT total number of shifting is much greater than a manual transmission as the driver is reluctant to shift the gear repeatedly.
