Used electronic assemblies with different mileage and thermal conditions were investigated in relation to their failure and ageing mechanism with the intention to describe the correlation between life cycle of the unit and the ageing mechanism and the expected reliability. It is necessary for the methodical investigation of failure mechanism to establish a structure by following points: Printed circuit board available for the investigation with the possible locations of failure and the related damaging mechanisms. Connecting technology. Components Besides the positions of failure, also the occurring conditions are decisive for the relevance of a possible failure mechanism. The purpose for determining the reliability of used electronic modules is to verify the (remaining) lifetime of used control units as compared to the lifetime of new products. The functionality and lifetime of used ABS control units were tested in order to be able to determine the suitability for reuse. The following steps were important for verifying the ABS control units: Procurement of control units (ECUs). Classification according to the available load characteristics. The endurance test was performed for 16 ABS control units. The modules were subject during this test after 50 cycles of slow temperature change to a continuous operation at high temperature. The vibration test was super-imposed with a temperature load. Totally 8 controllers were subject to a 85C/85%rH test. The electric functionality was likewise tested before and after the test. The records of the active tests were assessed after the individual tests have been finished. Furthermore, mechanical characteristics like the control unit's tightness were tested. It was necessary during the first optical inspection to sort out the modules on account of their mechanical damages. All modules functionally passed all tests; therefore basically the module is suitable for reuse.
