The strategy how to present driving dynamics within the limited workspace of a moving-base simulator is called motion cueing. Motion cueing algorithms have been originally developed for flight simulators. Due to much more demanding driving dynamics these algorithms are not sufficient for driving simulators. Modern approaches try to solve this task and hence to improve the usability of moving-base simulators for experimental evaluations. The most important aspects of the DLR motion cueing strategy will be explained, including results of the latest improvements. For the development of new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) which are related to vehicle control tasks or using haptic feedback a perceivable motion response to the driver's actions is essential. This is shown at the example of an assistance system for a side-stick controlled vehicle that was explored at the DLR. For that purposc, the control stick as well as the assistance system was integrated into two different simulator environments, one fixed-base and one moving-base simulator. A study with 10 participants was conducted comparing the driving performance within the two different simulators. In a first part the driving performance using a stick was examined. A second part introduced a new ADAS with two different assistance conditions. First evaluations show the necessity of lateral motion cues for the control strategy of the driver using a stick as the control device.
