Dynamic Steering Torque Control (DST) and Dynamic Steering Angle Control (DSA) are an example how vehicle dynamics steering functions can contribute to the improvement of vehicle stabilization and handling. A safety-oriented integration of these functions in already existing chassis control systems like ESP and ABS is crucial to ensure customer satisfaction and cost reduction. The function group Dynamic Steering Torque Control (DST) includes all vehicle functions which calculate a situation dependent steering torque offset to provide the driver with torque hints of the correct steering time and steering direction. The calculations are performed on the ESP electronic control unit and the torque offset request is transmitted to the EPS electronic control unit via CAN-bus or a similar bus-system. The function group Dynamic Steering Angle Control (DSA) provides vehicle functions for an AFS system which are not possible with AFS alone. The combined software of ESP and DSA is embedded in the ESP electronic control unit, allowing a strong functional integration and a dedicated interface. This system features all components known from a standard ESP and additionally requests steering interventions from an AFS system [3]. The example of the development of two different steering assistance function groups at the Chassis Systems Control business unit of Robert Bosch GmbH shows that a common methodology can be applied to the development and verification process. Although the evaluation and safety criteria of the function groups DSA and DST are quite different due to the physical principle of each controlled actuator, the evaluation, risk analysis and development methodology remain the same. This standardized approach helps to guarantee high quality and safety requirements that are necessary to achieve a widespread acceptance of these functions.
