The steering system, as the most important interface between the driver and the vehicle, significantly affects driving pleasure, driving comfort and driving safety. To optimize these attributes, the steering effort has to be freely adjustable for all driving situations for steering angle demand (operation angle) and steering torque demand (operation force). The Audi dynamic steering for the first time allows both degrees of freedom. As new functionalities compared to the well-known Servotronic the functionalities variable steering ratio and various functions for active vehicle stabilization were possible and have been realized in the new Audi A4 and A5. In order to determine the optimal steering ratio, the task of steering the car in three characteristic road-speed ranges was analysed. These are parking, driving at low to medium speeds (in town and cross country) and driving at high speeds. On cars with dynamic steering, ESP stabilises the car in critical dynamic situations not only by braking one or more wheels but also by adjusting the steering angle at the front wheels. This has two main advantages: the first is that the cars overall stability is improved when the brakes and steering are simultaneously activated, in other words there is a definite gain in active safety. The second is that in less critical driving situations, corrective brake interventions can be dispensed with either partially or completely. ESP uses the dynamic steering function if the car oversteers or understeers, and when braking on surfaces with different grip levels.
