Radiological NDT is used throughout the aircraft industry to assure safe operation in flight. Film techniques have been used for decades, and over the last 15 years, digital techniques have emerged that have led to cost effective, high reliability and quantitative inspections of the manufactured components that go into the aircraft and engine. Additionally, for in-service maintenance, more effective fleet management is obtained through more productive inspections on these structures and components that enable aircraft to safely return to service in a reduced time frame. The use of digital detector arrays, computed radiography, and computed tomography improves data collection, analysis, and data management that thereby improves the reliability of the inspection, fleet management, inspection speed, and safe operations.
