A new method for the detection of void-disbonds at the interfaces of adhesively bonded joins is considered. The presented method of non-destructive evaluation of adhesive bonds in sheet-metal assemblies is based on the comparison of the pulse-echo signal measured at the point of interest with the previously recorded reference waveform for the first metal sheet outside the joint. Large deviations in the current signal from the reference waveform indicate absence of disbonding at the front metal-adhesive interface. The response associated with the reflection at the rear interface of the adhesive layer can be obtained by subtraction of the additionally damped reference waveform from the current pulse-echo signal. The phase inversion of this response is an indication of good acoustic contact at the interface between the adhesive layer and second metal sheet. The exact waveform similarity of successive echoes is not required in the proposed algorithm. Thus, acoustic beam divergence and mode conversion at the interfaces between the layers are not important, and transducers with small element sizes can be used for testing to achieve sufficient lateral resolution. In this work, the processing method has been applied to experimental data obtained with transducers having element sizes of 3-4 mm.
