The capabilities of CATIA V5 to standardize design processes using master model technology speed up the concept design of new variants. Thus the requirement of built to order simulations increases. Most requirements come up early in the development cycle when not yet all data for a detailed FE analysis is fixed. Therefore these feasibility simulations base on simple approaches which do not need a FEA specialist for realization. For the successful use of FEA tools in CAD software by designers several questions concerning qualification and secured processes for modelling, simulation and evaluation have to be answered. The presentation shows the result of a pilot project which examines how a simple simulation can be done with GPS. The target of the project is a fail safe workflow that allows a qualitative evaluation of the feasibility of a tank and a comparison of different variants. The key feature in this workflow is the definition of support conditions that cannot be derived directly in CATIA V5.
