An hybrid experimental-numerical methodology has been developed for the prediction of the exterior rolling noise of a vehicle in running conditions. The experimental methodology allows to define a set of equivalent monopoles on the tyre surface: the analysis shown that with 6 monopoles there is a very good agreement between the measured and recalculated noise, and the three monopoles near the road surface are the most effective ones. For the numerical simulation of the acoustic transfer functions between the noise source on the tyre and the reference microphones two different numerical methodologies have been applied: the Boundary Element Method and the Infinite Element Method. Both these numerical methodologies showed a good agreement with the experimental measurements till to a frequency of 1800 Hz, with a slightly better level of precision given by the BEM approach. The calculation time required for this simulation is about 3-4 days, that is quite long but still acceptable in the development process of a new vehicle. Also, an important result was obtained by the development and the application of specific acoustic treatments in collaboration with Rieter: this solution gave an important reduction on the external rolling noise emission. The developed methodology applied on this solution shown to be reliable and efficient also for the analysis of the effect of modifications in the acoustic trimmings: the simulation was in agreement with the results obtained by the experimental tests on the modified prototype and this represents a good validation of the whole hybrid methodology that was developed.
