The steady state model of both the valve and the damper orifice compare very well to the experimental results and also to the manufacturer's specification. The transient model of the valve gives excellent correlation with the experimental results when switching the valve from open to close. This confirms that the compressibility effect of the fluid and the lumped parameter sub-model were adequate assumptions. The transient model of the valve, when swiched from closed to open, gives less satisfactory results, but is still a significant improvement on results presented by other authors. It should be possible to improve the transient model with a better solenoid force model and improved knowledge of the damping in the valve piston. The solenoid valve model can therefore be applied in the design of semi-active damper systems. The validity of the model and experimental verification is enhanced compared to previous efforts because the configuration for which it was carried out corresponds closely to the representative semi-active damper application. Future work includes linking the model to damper models (e.g., the model developed by Theron and Els (2007) and vehicle dynamic program and the compilation of mathematical models for other suitable standard solenoid valves using the same techniques.
