In this paper, the influence of local joint flexibilities on both structural behaviour as well as fatigue loads has been discussed. Two different approaches to include the joint flexibilities in structural analyses have been presented, the Buitrago approach, which uses parametric formulae depending on certain joint types and geometries, and the substructuring approach, which is able to deal with arbitrary geometries. The Buitrago approach has been reviewed in order to evaluate the extension of the approach to a broader range of geometric parameters of the joints. Especially the extension to higher slenderness ratios of the chord in general lead to a softer behaviour of the joints. It has been shown that the effect on the dynamic structural behaviour is negligible in the region of low global eigenfrequencies that are excited by wind and wave loads on offshore wind turbines. However, for higher local modes that can be excited by the operation of the turbines the effect could be much more significant. Due to the change in distribution of member forces, especially of the bending moments, within the structures caused by the local joint flexibilities this has a significant influence on the fatigue loading of the joints. At the example of the research platform FINO 1 it has been shown that the damage equivalent moments at the joints can be reduced by up to 40 % if local joint flexibilities are incorporated in the structural model.
