Magnesium alloys have a significant advantage in weight over alternative metallic design materials. However, the drawing of magnesium sheet metal is, due to its hexagonal lattice, only possible at elevated temperatures. By the increase of temperature, the formability is considerably higher, so that even complex forming parts can be produced. Previous studies concentrate on the characterization of the material and forming behavior of magnesium in small and middle size sample geometries. Close to production demonstrators are implemented, but often scaled in dimension. Geometrical deviation caused by the hot forming process is mentioned without being quantified. Effects of the process control like die velocity or temperature on the accurateness of drawn components with practical relevance have not yet been taken into account. In this work, a tool concept considering the material specific behavior of magnesium alloys is being developed to substitute aluminum blank sheet material of a series car body component for different magnesium alloys. The sample geometry is the inner part of a retractable hardtop module of a convertible. The forming tool is being designed to be segment-elastic and heatable. The sufficient segment elastic behavior of the blank holder influencing sample properties in sections is being proven by aluminum drawing parts concerning strain distribution and drawing defects. At the same time the production of aluminum drawing parts in series-production quality is being verified. Afterwards, experiments with magnesium sheet material of different alloys are being accomplished. Different die temperatures and different punch velocities arise for the production of acceptable magnesium samples depending on the magnesium material. Based on the experimental forming tests, the properties of the samples composed of aluminum and magnesium alloys are being compared. The influence of die temperature, blank holder force and punch velocity on the geometric accuracy and on the strain distribution are being quantitatively shown.
