Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production involves the introduction of oxygen and carbon to enable slag foaming to remove impurities, protect the furnace lining and enable substantial lower electrical energy consumption. Conventional EAF slag handling technology has traditionally involved the use of standard cast iron slag vessels (pots) and application specific transport equipment for disposal. The challenge facing many EAF operations is the inability to fully utilize oxygen and carbon injection benefits because of the larger volumes of slag produced which challenge the capacity of traditional slag vessels limiting heat sizes and lengthening tap to tap times due to multiple slag cycles. This paper reviews new technology available which enables larger volume, more efficient slag containment, transporting and disposal integrated with downstream finished product transporting systems. This STS Slag Transport System is a significant technical innovation that enables a substantial impact on improving worker safety, increasing EAF production tonnage, reducing operational costs and increasing return to shareholders.
