Climate Change and the increasing demand of primary resources are already now resulting in stricter environmental policies as well as rising fuel prices. Car manufactures have responded to this challenge by increasing the efficiency of their vehicles. The automotive industry has already made great progress in improving fuel efficiency which is mainly based on technical improvements and innovations of car and engine. This progress is monitored by a for the manufactures prescribed unified test cycle. However, the customer driving behaviour often deviates from this prescribed cycle. Since this customer behaviour is determining the real fuel consumption of the vehicles it is important to implement this behaviour in the vehicle development process. Using a sophisticated selection process of participants in combination with todays measurement equipment, which makes data acquisition easy and uncomplicated this type of research can be performed in a cost- and time efficient manner. Running this data through modern simulation tools, model-specific optimization potentials can be identified and technologies evaluated. Targeting specific measures both, legal requirement and customer needs, can be incorporated resulting in reduced fuel consumption by increased driving performance. This paper describes a methodology to incorporate model-specific customer driving behaviour into the development process and the there out resulting solution approach.
