Solid investment decision and reliable plant management are of high importance for the profitability of PV systems. For a sound investment decision high quality long term irradiance data is crucial. But only in few regions as e.g. in Switzerland a dense net of long term ground measurements of irradiance exists. Especially in south European and African countries, reliable investment decisions are often hindered due to a lack of reliable irradiance data. In such cases, satellite data can be a solution. For more than 20 years, geostationary satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA) take pictures from whole Europe and Northern Africa in at least hourly intervals. These satellite images can be used to calculate the irradiance at any location within the view of the satellite. A disadvantage of the satellite data are the limited temporal intervals which cause uncertainties of more than 10 % for daily or higher time resolutions. These problems can be overcome by a skillful combination of satellite and ground measured data. This paper highlights the field of application for satellite data in the PV sector. Also for plant monitoring, satellite derived irradiance data can be used. The field of application ranges from small to multi-MW PV systems. While for small PV systems satellite data are the only source for monitoring, for bigger PV systems always a comparison of the yield of the inverters should be integrated. Additional satellite derived data as e.g. snow information is very useful for monitoring of PV plants of every size. Enecolo AG uses satellite data for both applications, energy assessments as well as plant monitoring, with good experiences.
