An extensive combinatorial workflow has been developed to dramatically increase the rate of experimentation related to marine coating research and development. The workflow incorporates all aspects of the experimental process. Several novel HT (high throughput) measurement systems have been developed that utilise live marine organisms in a laboratory environment. Extensive correlations between results obtained with the HT measurements and measurements made using conventional ocean immersion testing have been developed. Results of these studies have shown that good correlations exist between most of the HT measurements and ocean immersion testing. The combinatorial workflow has been used extensively to explore new approaches for developing environmentally-friendly marine coatings, and several promising compositions have been scaled-up for ocean immersion testing.
