For a long time steel slag has been used successfully as a construction material for roadways, earthworks and hydraulic structures. In comparison, its use on railway tracks is not very common. Considering the excellent experiences in road construction, the use of steel slag for railway tracks should also be successful. In principle there is a structure in layers comparable to road construction: base courses on which railway ballast and rails are placed. For high speed trains today the ballast is often replaced by pre-cast concrete elements. According to German regulations for base courses for railway tracks, only the use of natural aggregates, recycled aggregates and blast furnace slag is allowed. Consistent with an arrangement with Deutsche Bahn, a research project has been carried out regarding the use of steel slag for those base courses. During the project, laboratory tests have been carried out and a test track has been constructed. In addition to the tests in accordance with the above mentioned regulations, CBR tests were also undertaken to characterise the stability of the steel slag layers. Also the development of water permeability with time was observed. All laboratory tests showed very good results enabling a test track to be constructed. Observing the test track volume stability has been especially interesting and up to now there is no indication of any problem based on poor volume stability. Another field of application is the use of steel slag as railway ballast. The requirements for the mechanical properties for this application must be met, but it has been feared that metallic particles in steel slag aggregates have an influence on the magnetic field of electronic signalling, therefore, signal transmission between conductor and engine antenna has been tested. Results of these tests show that there is no influence on signal transmission and steel slag can be used also for railway ballast.
