The model presented in this paper has been useful for the analysis of different phenomena during the shifting of cam actuated robotized gearbox. The performance of two cam profiles in terms of wear, kinematic and dynamic aspects have been investigated. Although the dynamic response of the cycloidal profile seems better than that of the constant speed, in terms of reliability the situation is different. The choice of the simple constant speed profile reduces the manufacturing costs. In the study of the gearbox for touring cars, using the synchronising meshing system, the time cannot be reduced to very small values, as in the gearbox using a dog ring. This means that to improve the performance of the gearbox, in terms of shifting times, it is necessary to reduce the time spent in the sleeve movement. This goal is achieved by operating the cam at higher speed, thus generating high wear of the part and reducing the reliability. An optimal way to reduce the shifting time is the use of the dog ring type gearbox, as in the racing car. However a reduction of comfort is expected from this choise, which is not recommended for touring cars. The alternative for companies is the automation of the traditional gearbox as discussed in this paper. This has benefit for reliability and comfort. The model herein presented can be improved in the simulation of both the contact between the sleeve teeth and gear. The faithful simulation of the complex dynamics of contact phenomena is very challenging. Our approach maintained a compromise between accuracy and simulation speed. Our analysis is mainly focused on the phase of motion and on its optimisation. In fact, by choosing the appropriate motion law one has the possibility to reduce shifting time. The paper reported how this choice affects quantitatively wear and dynamic performances. In future development of the present study the lubrication effect on the wear and contact between cam and follower will be added. More, in order to verify our model, the design of a test rig is in progress: the device will be able to simulate the shifting operation of a cam actuated and synchronised gearbox (the example which inspires the project is described in www.pitechnology.com).
