It occurred that welding process of tee joints with thorough joint penetration was a very difficult task to cope with in an aspect of mechanisation and automation under the conditions of assembly work in the shipyard. It was required to work out very strict and narrow tolerances related to welding groove geometry, welding parameters, parameters of operation control of automatic welding machines for automation and mechanisation of duplex steel welding processes at this stage of work (welding carried out on the slipway). The welding procedures WPS were developed and the approval given by the Classification Society (DNV) was received to use the automated welding technology by means of FCAW, SAW methods with application of the heavy duty method of duplex steel joints of cargo tanks under the Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa Sp. z o.o. The main objective of the development works was to implement the automated and mechanised welding technology in order to provide high quality and repeatability of results. The following can be recognised as primary effects of the automated and mechanised welding technology: Higher quality of welded joints, lower total costs of shipbuilding. Extension of the order by the building of two following vessels for the current ship-owner, better working conditions, humanisation of workplaces and high specialisation of employees. Thanks to the automation and mechanisation of welding processes the Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa Sp. z o.o. is becoming more attractive to shipowners; it is becoming an enterprise of a stable position on the market giving social security to the employees and their families, reducing unemployment. The works during shipbuilding are becoming a smaller hazard to health of the employees due to reduction of the scope of works in hazardous working environment.
