Currently future concepts for cryogenic tanks are under development for the long-term replacement of the present launcher ARIANE 5. New cryogenic tank concepts coupled with the introduction of light weight material as CFRP and aluminium lithium (AA 2195) and new technologies as friction-stir welding and net shape spin-forming providing a performance increase to future launcher payload capacity. The challenge of a minimised structure mass demands an optimised design concept w.r.t. the recommended non-linear strength-, damage tolerance- and buckling assessment. As an example an optimisation of the thickness distribution of the bulkheads is performed. This optimised design can efficiently be shaped by advanced manufacturing processes like net shape spin-forming. Aluminium lithium is proposed as a future light weight alloy which is compatible to the new technologies and provides improved material properties compared to the commonly used aluminium alloy AA 2219. In addition the interaction between structural/mechanical and thermal effects, such as the occurrence of conductive heat leaks or resulting vaporization of cryogenic fuels due to the common-bulkhead must be considered with particular emphasize. This can be achieved only on the basis of the experience of the actual tank assemblies and analysis of technological and conceptual aspects.
