Today's necessity for shortening design cycles is also taking its toll from the aerodynamic development process. CFD analysis has developed to become an important tool. There are already applications like the shape optimization in the early development phase, where CFD has its benefits. Although CFD still suffers from timing issues especially during the detail optimization in later phases it can already be equal in terms of cost efforts with a conventional, wind tunnel based, development. Especially during late development phases, where a large number of modifications can be tested in the wind tunnel within a short time period, wind tunnel tests will remain indispensable for a very long time. With increasing computional power, improved pre-processing and accuracy as well as future code developments, CFD will gain additional application areas and importance in the automotive development. In the future, one will not deal with the question, which tool should be better used for one task. Both tools have to be optimized into one integrated process and take the benefits of both to obtain a better product. Additionally, it could be shown, that CFD user also need a detailed understanding of the experiment to enable a reasonable comparison. This can be the start, where the experiment can take benefit from CFD, e.g. for pad correction, and both tools can become in combination even more powerful than they already are.
