This paper details the impact of the oscillator in a GPS or Galileo receiver. In a receiver the oscillator is used for the translation of the received signal in baseband, for the analog-to-digital conversion and to build a numerically controlled oscillator for acquisition or for tracking. The analysis in tracking mode shows that the down conversion has a major impact on the final phase noise at the output of the phase locked loop (PLL). The study is performed with three space-qualified oscillators: Micro-OCXO, OCXO and Ultra-Stable Oscillator so that the authors can see the relationship between the oscillator characteristic and the phase noise. The phase noise at the output of the PLL is directly linked to its loop bandwidth. For large loop bandwidths the oscillator has not a real impact on the phase noise. But the characteristics of the oscillator have a major impact on the phase noise when the loop bandwidth is small. The paper recalls the link between the PLL tracking threshold and the loop bandwidth. In most applications the PLL must remain locked to let the receiver demodulate the navigation data. In reacquisition mode the oscillator can be used as a clock to help the receiver to acquire the incoming signal and especially non-periodic codes like the Galileo PRS. The paper identifies the link between the time uncertainty and the oscillator characteristics when Galileo or GPS signals are not received during a given time. This time uncertainty corresponds to the search window in time domain. This paper is focused on space-qualified technologies, however the results of this analysis remains useful for terrestrial applications.
