The recent progress and future perspective of the coated high tensile strength steel (HSS) are briefly reviewed. To satisfy the trade-off between lightweighting and crash safety of the automobiles, the application of HSS has been rapidly increasing. Coating HSS causes some difficulties because of the high alloy chemistry of the substrate. In Japan various coated HSS have been developed and brought into actual use to meet the requirements from the car manufacturers.
