In several European countries it is already mandatory to drive with light at daytime in order to improve road safety. Even without having a common EU wide regulation yet, more and more car manufacturers are now integrating dedicated Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) into their headlamps. These dedicated lamps are supposed to have low power consumption and a high life time which ideally exceeds car life time. With their high efficiency and their high life time, LEDs are the perfect light source for DRLs. Apart from the technical advantages, LEDs allow new styling possibilities. Cars which are using LEDs in the DRLs can be given a completely new appearance and a unique brand signature. Harsh environmental conditions, like high ambient temperatures, humidity and vibrations are demanding robust high power LEDs in order to provide high lumen maintenance in combination with best colour homogeneity. These topics will be discussed in the paper. Requirements for LEDs in DRLs, for instance fulfill the well-known ECE / SAE regulations for DRLs, it is necessary to get approximately 150 lumen from the LED emitters. In addition the color of the LEDs has to be within the ECE / SAE color coordinates. Compared to other signaling functions like Rear combination lamps or CHMSL, the LED in a DRL will see significantly higher ambient temperatures. Ambient temperatures up to 125 degree C are possible, dependent on the position of the DRL. A separate DRL in the bumper will see lower temperatures than a DRL mounted inside of the headlamp close to the main beam. Conclusively, DRLs offer new styling opportunities for the car designer, both for Daytime and for Nighttime design. They are among the most challenging signaling applications for LEDs. Today's LEDs like the Advanced Power TOPLED, the Golden Dragon or the Platinum Dragon already have the optical, electrical and thermal performance to fulfill the requirements for LEDs in DRLs.
