Knee airbag systems are recognized as safety devices in order to enhance the safety of occupants during vehicle collisions. In certain frontal impacts, the system provides lower limbs support and influences occupant kinematics. The knee airbag deploys rapidly through a narrow space between the knees and the instrumental panel. In the present study, the mechanism of knee joint behavior during knee airbag deployments was investigated, especially for out-of-position (OOP) conditions. A human knee joint simulation model based on pig knee joint simulations and experiments was developed and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) elongations are investigated. The PCL elongations are affected with OOP conditions. The velocity dependency caused by the ligament viscosity and the hill-climb non-linear effect of the meniscus restrain PCL elongation. The value of dummy knee slider for the OOP condition has a higher elongation because of the knee slider being velocity independent.
