Before production can be launched in a newly built aircraft factory a wide range of planning tasks must be solved. The applied tools, methods and processes are of crucial importance for the efficiency and quality that can be achieved during the planning and also within the production process itself. In case of a CE project (concurrent engineering), additional requirements must be considered in the definition of such tools and methods. The approach presented in this article has been developed and deployed during the planning, building and production-launch of the A400M Fuselage Assembly in Bremen, Germany. Noticeable is that the overall flexibility is important. The data, its structure, its use and even the tool environment change continuously. The developed approach uses a hierarchical structure that is being detailed top down, ensuring the permanent availability of a complete and actual data set. Therefore, a main focus in the development of such methods must incorporate flexible data structures and interfaces. A future potential can be seen in the further use of the optimization algorithm, once the technical process has been stabilized after the completion of the prototype phase.
