As the need to further reduce vehicle weights increases, Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) become more appealing for use in automotive body structures. AHSS typically have improved fatigue strength over conventional steels and High Strength Steels (HSS) of similar tensile strength. Sample orientation can playa significant role in fatigue properties, as can cold-forming and surface finish. The effect of sample orientation on the fatigue life of a hot-rolled TRIP780 multiphase steel subjected to plane strain forming has been analysed. While the sample orientation is not significant for the as-received material, there is an effect for prestrained samples tested at a low strain amplitude. Cold-rolling and surface polishing of the sheet both affected the fatigue life.
