A new geometric property of shipbuilding structural profiles is introduced to consider asymmetric bending. This is the so-called section modulus for asymmetric bending, which allows for determining the total bending stresses in the structural profile for any angle of the attached plate and any angle of the plane of the applied load. As for symmetric bending, the major assumption behind the developed procedure for calculating the section modulus for asymmetric bending is that the structural profile works as a unit, that is, independently.Formulas are derived for calculation of the section modulus for asymmetric bending of shipbuilding structural profiles. This section modulus is considered to be more appropriate to use when the strength of different types of structural profiles with different angle of the attached plates is to be evaluated more accurately. The existing formulas in the classification societies rules provide very good accuracy for small angle of the attached plate relative to the horizontal axis. The maximum difference between the proposed method and the approximate formulas in the rules is around 15% for symmetric and asymmetric Fundia and built-up T-bars. The maximum difference for angles around 15 deg is 5%. More accurate results provide the approximate formulas with sinus of the angle [see equation (2)].
