Researches on failures ofcorrosion protection on ships and swimming sea marks often have shown the general deficiency of used systems for various corrosion loads, especially in sea water. Among others insufficient coatings concerning the coating materials as well as the applicated dryfilm thickness have been the reasons of corrosion protection damages, e.g. corrosion of substrate. According to the experiences of protection of hydraulic steel structures under severe corrosion conditions in aggressive environments it is proposed to transfer the good experiences from the field of protection ofsteel structures to the field of ships. Especially for swimming sea marks there is growing interest on a long period protection due to new technical equipment of lightening that enables longer periods of use. By that proposed systems for immersion zones as well water changing zone should be composed only by very stable materials like chemical hardened resins. Generally the thickness should be at least 350 Mymeters and, especially on ship up to the water line, should be completed to 500 Mymeter after the first overcoating. In this context also the knowledge of cathodic corrosion protection method in combination with coatings is important and partially can be derived from the experiences by Federal waterways engineering and research institute (BAW) with hydraulic steel structures.
