Sheet Moulding Compounds (SMC) and Bulk Moulding Compounds (BMC) are fibre reinforced thermosetting resins that usually contain also fillers, thermoplastic components, additives, pigments, and thickening agents. Due to this heterogeneous composition SMC and BMC can be adapted easily to different demands. This is shown be means of some examples. The electro market is one traditional field for SMC/BMC applications. The key demand is electrical insulation (typical surface resistivities are 10 -14 Ohm), good mechanical properties and high flame retardance. SMC and BMC can also be rendered antistatic by the use of conductive fillers leading to surface resistivity of 10 exp -6) Ohm. In cars SMC is widely used nowadays for the production of decklids, fenders, and especially spoilers because of the weight saving potential. The thermo-mechanical properties; i.e. the high glass transition temperature, allow the on-line painting of SMC parts together with the car body in the cataphoretic painting process, where they are exposed to temperatures of up to 190 deg C. This leads to a be ter colour matching by comparison with off-line painting. In trucks SMC is a polymeric material that is particularly suitable for large size body panels. In structural automotive applications SMC/BMC can offer a weight saving alternative, where constructions of several parts can be moulded in one single SMC part with the full functionality. With railway interior parts like window frames and door frame covers flame retardance is the key request on SMC. The standard for high speed trains can be met by SMC. In the construction sector the use of SMC is driven by rising steel prices.
