In the structural design process of ships, shipyards and design agents are working together in a distributed network. A significant amount of time is needed for information exchange and the co-ordination of distributed design activities. The partners simultaneously perform design tasks by utilising their own specific knowledge and design methods which lead to different solutions for similar designs problems. This paper is based on the collaborative research and development project 'Context Sensual Structural Components' (KonSenS). It outlines a system for the management and application of predefined but highly configurable design solutions for the detailed structural design. Based on a client server application which is integrated with the CAD-system tribon, an improved productivity and quality level is achieved. Details of the realised system are discussed; an example for modelling a bracket shows the improved modelling method which leads to error minimised ship product data models.
