Radar data processing (RDP) and the preparation of a continuous synthetic air situation display (ASD) with highest possible accuracy is a fundamental tool for controllers in ATC. The quality and accuracy of the presented aircraft displayed in the controller's working position display (CWP) depends on a variety of influencing factors, namely quality of the measurements of each contributing radar, quality of the track processing in the RDP, preciseness of the map and aircraft positional projection, delay times in the communication LAN from radar until display, performance and accuracy of the CWP software itself, stability and reliability of the total process chain. Eurocontrol developed and published a standard for radar surveillance in 1997. A tool development triggered by Eurocontrol for the same purpose resulted in the system SASS-C, but is lacking online analysis features as the DFS needed. For this purpose the DFS developed the Analysis Working Position (AWP), embedded in its operational RDP System PHOENIX. The AWP may serve as an example implementation of related quality assurance and service level monitoring requirements based on Eurocontrol standard. The AWP today provides online collocated display of tracks, correlated and uncorrelated plots of all radars with a number of filtering and identification features for analysis, online analysis of radar measurement deviations, evaluation of travel time effects, online analysis of message statistics per radar, in-depth ASTERIX message inspection, recording and replay for scene inspection.
