A new alloy fin stock for automobile heat exchangers has been developed. The new Al-Si-Fe-Mn-Zn alloy is cast using a twin-roll continuous caster. This method caused the intermetallic compounds in the material to disperse finely and densely. Using these compounds enabled to produce a new alloy fin stock that has both high tensile strength and high mechanical strength. At a thickness of 0.05 mm, the new alloy fin stock's tensile strength after the brazing process is about 130 MPa, and its electrical conductivity is about 50 % IACS. The tensile strength of the new alloy fin stock is much higher than that of general Al-Mn alloys fin stocks, while the thermal conductivity is comparable to that of commercial pure Al fin stocks. Corrosion resistance of the new alloy fin stock is the same as that of 3000-series alloy fin stocks. The new alloy fin stock also exhibits good in-process properties such as sag resistance and erosion resistance against molten filler metals. The above properties make it very suitable for the manufacture of thinner fin stocks. The new alloy fin stock that has a thickness of 0.05 mm has been used for fin stock in radiators. The fin stock can be used to produce aluminum heat exchangers that are lighter and smaller. The casting of the new alloy is performed by Choil Aluminum Co., LTD and ELVAL Hellenic Aluminum Industry.
