The AirConditioning Library and the simulation tool Dymola, both based on the standardized, freely available modeling language Modelica, have been selected by the German automotive OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) as the preferred tool for model development and exchange for the A/C system in passenger cars. The paper will give an overview over the AirConditioning Library and present application examples from its use at DaimlerChrysler. The library contains a complete range of component models and templates of typically used and proposed A/C system architectures and all currently used as well as new and proposed refrigerants for automotive applications. The modeling detail is appropriate for component selection, system architecture design, system integration for overall vehicle thermal management and climate control design. The AirConditioning Library provides all components necessary to simulate automotive A/C cycles. The models have been validated in by several industrial partners and are used regularly in the production A/C design process of several German OEM. The Library is well suited for virtual experiments to assess the performance of alternative refrigerants. Simulation results with the non-natural alternative rerigerant fluid H demonstrate that it can not be used as a drop-in replacement without risking 12-17% capacity degradation. However, with some modifications to the production system it seems possible and plausible to use fluid H instead of R134a with a manageable amount of re-engineering.
