The Norwegian based company Waveenergy was established in April 2004 to develop the SSG wave energy converter concept. The SSG (Seawave Slot-cone Generator) is a device that will utilise the energy in the waves to produce electric power. Wavcenergy's SSG concept is based on storing the potential energy of the incoming waves in several reservoirs placed one above the other. The incoming wave will run uphill the structure slope and on its return it will flow into the different reservoirs. The small waves will only have enough power to enter the lowest reservoir, whilst the bigger waves will move higher up and be stored at a higher level reservoir. The captured water will run from the reservoirs through a multi-stage turbine. The higher up the waves are captured the more energy they will produce. This patented multi-reservoir concept ensures that all the different heights of waves are utilised for energy production, which gives a continuous production. The number of reservoirs and the height of these are determined by the wave climate at the specific plant location. The special design of the multistage water turbine will enable the utilisation of different heights of water with only one turbine wheel and one generator. This will run as long at least one reservoir is producing. The number of start/stop sequence on the generator is minimised and the result is a smoother energy supply to the grid and an increased overall efficiency. A full-scale test plant will be 10 m wide and have an installed capacity of 200 kW. A wave climate study concluded with an optimal configuration with three reservoirs. The lower level will have a crest height of 1.5 m, the mid level a height of 3.0 m and the top level will be 5.0 m. The structure will be pre-fabricated in a dry dock and then installed at the test location with a special barge normally used to install offshore windmill foundations. The structure weight will be 1500 t. All mechanical components exposed to seawater will be in stainless steel. Generator, control and surveillance system will be placed in a dry room inside the structure. Preliminary estimates based on test results show that a full scale SSG plant implemented into 500 m long breakwater will be able to produce 10 GWh/a to 20 GWh/a.
