The use of rapeseed oil fuel in vegetable oil compatible tractors has environmental benefits and increases agricultural value added. However, the compliance with exhaust gas emission regulations is not known sufficiently. Thus, it is the aim of a present research project, to measure limited emissions of two practice used tractors recurrently by stationary 8-Mode test cycles (2000/25/EG). With the tested Deutz-Fahr tractor the relevant exhaust gas stage II is proven to be fulfilled with rapeseed oil fuel for CO, HC and particle mass, but not for NOx. For the Fendt tractor the fulfilment of relevant exhaust gas stage I with rapeseed oil fuel could be verified. Generally it can be stated, that idle and low load operation with rapeseed oil leads to higher particulate mass- and CO-emissions in comparison to diesel fuel, whereas during middle and heavy load operation particle mass and CO-emissions are equal or less. During all eight test stages NOx-emissions with rapeseed oil fuel are little higher than with diesel fuel, but on the other hand hydrocarbons are reduced significantly. Mutagenic effects of exhaust gas particles from engine combustion processes with rapeseed oil fuel are subject of several current studies. Comparing the mutagenic effects of exhaust gas particles, derived from the operation of rapeseed oil fuel with diesel fuel, results show controversial tendencies. Hence, it is assumed that engine, adaptation system and test conditions affect the mutagenic potential of exhaust particles more heavily than the type of fuel (rapeseed oil or diesel).
