To ensure safety the Japanese government announced that fuel cell vehicles must be equipped with hydrogen gas leakage detectors. These detectors require highly accurate gas selectivity and a rapid response, less than 1 sec, to gas leakage. Therefore, a hydrogen gas leakage detector with a fast response time was developed using a catalytic combustion type micro-gas sensor. The micro-gas sensor was fabricated on a silicon substrate by the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technique to perform with low heat capacity allowing for faster response. The response time achieved for detection of hydrogen gas leakage was less than 1 sec. An active carbon filter was optimized to maintain a fast response time and improve gas selectivity between hydrogen gas and other interference gases such as alcohol and volatile organic compounds.
