This article treats the modeling, implementation and simulation of multi-body systems (MBS) characterized by a large number of bodies and contacts with impacts and friction. Models of such MBS can be built up modularly by subsystems and interactions in a hybrid way. For simulating general MBS with contacts an object oriented environment has been developed, where information is exchanged between the MBS and the numerical integrator. Finally, an example will show a complex industrial application being modeled as a MBS with more than 1000 degrees of freedom and more than 1000 contacts. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) with push belt is investigated. For simulating the CVT, a two-dimensional model has been established. The model is assembled by subsystems and interactions. At both pulleys the contact force reaches its highest magnitudes at the entrance and at the exit of the pulley due to the pre-stressing of the push belt. Between entrance and exit, elastic deformations of the system cause a decrease of the contact force.
