Camouflage techniques involve materials designed to blend with their background. Conventional camouflage clothing has two basic concealing elements in the visual region, namely color and pattern. However, these have become insufficient as image intensifying devices have been replaced by a variety of sophisticated electronic devices using the entire electro-magnetic spectrum to monitor the battle. Camouflage has been developed to hide objects in the UV, visible, and IR spectral regions as well as combinations of spectral regions, depending on the surroundings and the type of warfare anticipated. Visual camouflage patterns are often produced using colors that exist in the surrounding terrestrial elements. Melt-spun fibers containing zirconium dioxide and titanium dioxide have been tested as camouflage using UV photography in snowy regions. In the NIR region, objects are seen by their reflections. Synthetic fibers dyed with small dye molecules usually have little or no absorption in the NIR region. One method of modifying the NIR reflection of a base fabric is through the addition of nano- or micro-particles to the polymer during fiber manufacturing. Camouflage can also reduce the thermal signatures of targets by reducing temperature or emissivity. Thermal blankets and thermal nets are used as camouflage in this range. The principles involved in radar camouflage include absorption and scattering of radiation in the relevant range. Camouflage has also been produced to serve effectively in several regions of the electromagnetic spectrum by using different combinations of additives on the same base materials.
