Derived from the utilization of aluminium in structural applications for Shinkansen trains in Japan and its increasing use, the focus of this article is on the development and the background of railway train strucures and the utilization of aluminium alloys for interior components in trains. A new welding method and its relationship to aluminium alloy materials as well as a new alloy material from the perspective of the railway stock manufacturer are described. Unfortunately, due to recent escalating prices of metal, the cost ratio of aluminium material for rolling stock is drastically increasing. However, high recycling efficiency, energy savings, light weight, and one-unit structures are still important superiorities that only aluminium materials can provide. Combined with new joining technologies that are suitable for aluminium materials such as FSW, the application of aluminium for rolling stock will continue to grow in the future. Hopefully we will all see a future in which the rolling stock industry can provide safer and more comfortable rolling stsock by utilizing aluminium alloy materials.
