The formal methods accepted and capable of successful use in the scope of safety validation of a railway system or component need to comply with a series of requirements, most of them normalised. But, the majority of the norms and standards does not explicitly refer to the formal methods as such. The norms transcend a given procedure and are therefore, in many cases either ignored or not properly used when a formal method is designed and applied. The paper proposes the actions and requirements - derived from the existing norms and regulations - which should be applied to validate the formal tool for its use in the scope of proof of safety. By this way the paper fills a gap in the existing practice and intends to contribute for a clear initial specification of a generic formal method susceptible of being used in the scope of validation of safety in a railway procedure. An example is given based on parametric modelling of risk probability for collisions with endangering follows for passengers of the ICE train at the level crossings on the upgraded HS (High Speed) line Utrecht-Arnhem.
