Clarification will be provided about non-existent standards for operation with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) European Train Control System (ETCS) and the concept of customising ERTMS/ETCS for railways. The implementation of ERTMS/ETCS will influence the method and possibilities of rail operation, depending on the selected ERTMS/ ETCS solutions. Otherwise, ambient rail operations determine the implementation of ERTMS/ETCS. Rail operations which are influenced by ERTMS/ETCS are referred to as ETCS operations. In the Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI), technical functions (ERTMS/ ETCS FRS) and technical solutions for nearly all those technical functions (ERTMS/ETCS SRS) are standardised. This set of technical solutions is called ERTMS/ETCS Class 1 functions in relation to the first step. However, there is no standard concerning the kind of protection, control or mode switchover tasks in rail operation and the ERTMS/ETCS solutions to be used. Using some fundamental findings relating to the underlying factors for rail operation, a formal approach for collating participants in ETCS operation and the operational tasks of ETCS for an individual ERTMS/ETCS application will be shown. Following the first step of objective-oriented analysis (OOA), this method is called the ETCS Domain Model. Using these results, a systematic approach for collating degraded situations will be given.
