ProdTect is a software tool which enables producers of complex technical equipment to develop ecologically sound products by providing information related to a product's treatment and recycling at an early planning stage (Design for Recycling DfR). It starts with a model definition that is integrated into the data landscape of a typical automotive OEM. Existing data of different quality levels can be imported to allow step by step product assessment. Data describing the recycling processes in terms of technical capabilities and economic performance have to be available to perform the calculation. At the calculation stage, end of life parameter such as recycling rate, pre-treatment steps, disassembly time and cost are calculated. If the end of life performance does not fulfil the requirements, product improvement can be undertaken. Recycling relevant design aspects of the vehicle are analysed and improvement potentials are identified. Beside the ecological impacts, economical as well as marketing- and use-relevant aspects of ecologically sound product design are considered and analysed in the tool by using the Eco Quality Function Deployment (Eco QFD). The user of ProdTect Eco should be able to compare different solutions in the product design with the implemented LCA (life cycle assessment) method. In terms of lightweight construction, ability to disassemble or toxic substance content, the developer is in a position to consider the environmental impact of the whole life cycle of a part or of the whole product. As a result of the case study with a vehicle, it is verified that the new features Eco-QFD are useful to integrate consumer needs from the beginning, and to bring consumer needs and environmental aspects of a product into balance, and finally that information is provided, which are useful to communicate the environmental information to the consumers. In the Project it has been shown that a focus on target parts is useful to get a clear result, because a car consists of the high number of parts.
