One of the key to the success of the health management of space systems is an extensive use of interrelated software programs for built-in test, self diagnostic and fault isolation, self repair, and internal maintenance management. Software and firmware programming of electronics will become a much larger development cost. In this paper, very high speed integrated circuit (VHSIC) technology and the use of application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) as well as recent IC failures and electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) in-situ maintenance on-orbit are discussed. The main reason that VHSIC is outdated is that very high speed is a term whose definition moves with time. Nowadays, systems on a chip are used, devices with a processor, memory management, PROM and random access memory all on the same chip. On future designs, major coordination will be required when functions are shared between subsystems. Therefore NASA has been looking into reconfiguring ASICs for space applications. The goal is to have systems reconfigure much like a hard drive does on the computer and then provide a status as to when the risk is getting high and it is time to repair the faulty parts. In the paper the present-day health management of the electrical power system on-orbit is outlined. The approach is based upon the receipt of telemetry data that report the performance parameters of the orbital replaceable units (ORU), such as voltage, current and temperature. A discussion of middleware follows this description. A distributed environment is described, and a grid computing solution is proposed for future designs.
