A new type of hygienic needle gripper has been developed to handle non-rigid products as fish pieces. The aim of this work has been to determine the operating capability for the gripper system in order to quantify the operational envelope according to the quality of the raw material. A shaking test was used to determine the limits of forces acceptable in the handling process. Tests demonstrated capabilities for grabbing, transporting and delivering fish pieces within the cycle times sought to satisfy industrial requirements and accepted quality of the fish pieces.
