Diffraction-based residual stress analysis is a powerful tool for the engineer interested in optimization of materials and production processes such as forging of components or welding of sheet structures. Residual stress analysis is possible in the interior of thick material (up to several centimetres) and in many cases it can be done in a completely non-destructive way. The spatial resolution achieved by neutron diffraction is sufficient for a large number of problems. For example, validation of stress predictions gained from finite element models are a broad field of application as it was shown for forged turbine discs. As modern joining techniques make their entrance into aircraft construction, the inclusion of residual stresses in damage concepts like crack initiation and growth models will be of growing importance. Diffraction-based residual stress analysis can contribute largely to such investigations as today it is a routine technique that can deliver reliable results. Finally, the costs of such measurements are comparable to that of other sophisticated experimental methods.
